2021 Transition Patrol - Everything You Need To Know

2021 Transition Patrol

It's official, the 2021 Transition Patrol is the 160 mm mixed wheel size* bike the internet clairvoyants predicted!  Available in alloy only, the new bike's geometry is enduro teetering on the edge of bike park - Transition say you can run a 180 mm 27.5 dual crown fork if you're that way inclined. Small and medium frames have shorter chain stays than the large and XL frames (434 and 440 mm respectively).

There's adjustable geometry through the flip chip in the shock mount and headset adjustment. From what Transition have told us, we think the higher position would be where you would probably keep the bike for our trails, maybe using the lower position for uplift days or holidays in the Alpine bike parks. The straight 56 mm headtube is a new design that lets you change the angle or the reach by changing headset cups.

2021 Transition Patrol Raw

Transition have worked on the kinematics of this and the other new model being launched this week ;) to offer better mid-travel support, so the bike should feel better pedalling and pumping though sections. Off-the-top sensitivity has also been improved for small bump compliance.

Frames have protection on the chainstay and seat stay, we well as a shuttle guard under the downtube. The frame has an accessory mount under the top tube as well as bottle mounts, pretty much what you'd expect from a new bike in 2021. We asked Transition if there will be a carbon Patrol, the answer was a vague "we're always working on things", but they hinted that while they think they've got the mixed wheel size geometry and sizing bang on, it's a new category of bikes, and maybe they will bring a carbon version to the market once they've proven there's demand. Other than the Specialized Status, we can't think of any other mixed wheel bikes other than a few niche brands, so it's probably fair enough to say it's a new category! If you've ridden a Status, you're probably very much looking forward to trying the new Patrol.

There's a limited number of Deore spec bikes due in the first deliveries, in future an NX spec bike will replace it. This is all very "2021" - Transition cite component supply shortages as the reason.

If you're going to run the bike with 170 mm rear travel, this year's Fox X2 shock can be adjusted without a full strip down - you can remove the spacer while doing an air can service. The Super Deluxe equipped models can be adjusted, but that requires a full strip down. While we're talking about shocks, Transition say you can run the bike with whatever shock you like, but that the development of the revised linkage was done on the shocks fitted to the bikes.

Another nice detail that is the use of a SRAM universal mech hanger. If you're not familiar with this concept, it's a stroke of genius! Basically, the SRAM hanger fits a huge number of bikes across as all brands, so you're not relying on being able to get exactly the right hanger for your bike from the local shop. Using this hanger relies on the bike manufacturer speccing the bike when they design it, so well done to Transition for making this choice.

Available as complete bikes or as a frame only, we'll have the first deliveries in June with more arriving through July and August. If you would like to order a bike, please call us on 01330 828562 to leave a deposit. (You can read more about ordering bikes from 20Twenty here.)

We've put all the information we have so far on this page, so scroll on for the geo, spec choices and prices.

*Transition are calling it "mixed wheel size", not "mullet"!
